Establishment and growth of Azpetrol became possible owing to the government support for the private sector - Huseinagha Rahimov

"The world faces global economic crisis now. There is a decline and demanning in the world economy. However, a negative impact of economic crisis almost has not been felt in the economy of Azerbaijan owing to successful economical policy held by President Ilham Aliyev. Notwithstanding that there is inflation throughout the world, GDP rate in Azerbaijan grows. The fact that Azerbaijan has undergone fewer losses during the crisis proves that growth of our economy is on the right way. Economic crisis did not have strong impact on economic activity of Azpetrol. Making every effort the Company did not allow demanning. Thus, 8 new filling stations have been put into operation. This means over 200 additional workplaces", Huseinagha Rahimov, General Director of Azpetrol Company, said in his exclusive interview with Caspian Energy Investor.

 

 

Huseinagha Hasanagha Rahimov, General Director of Azpetrol Company, was born on May 30, 1966 in Liman settlement, Lankaran region. In 1983 he graduated with honors from the school and entered the General Economics Faculty of Azerbaijan National Economics Institute. In 1990 graduated from Production Economics and Management Faculty of Baku Branch of Leningrad Finance and Economics Institute named after N.A.Voznesenky. In 1990-1993 years as a young specialist he was a Chief Accountant in the Ministry of Municipal Economy; from 1994 to 1995 he worked as the Head of Financial Office in the Foreign Tourism Council under the Cabinet of Ministers and in 1995-2001 years managed the Financial Office in the Azershergtijaret Union of the Ministry for Foreign Economic Relations. During 2002-2003 years Mr. Rahimov worked for Azpetrol Company as a Head of Financial Department and since 2003 year he has been acting as a General Director of Azpetrol Company. At the same time on June 30, 2009, Mr. Rahimov was elected a Vice President of the Confederation of Entrepreneurs (Employers) of the Azerbaijan Republic. 

Married, has 2 children.          

 

Caspian Energy Investor (CEI): Mr. Rahimov, could you please inform us about Azpetrol Company, its establishment and growth history?

Huseinagha Rahimov, General Director of Azpetrol Company: Establishment and growth of Azpetrol, its decisive steps in the independent market economy of Azerbaijan became possible owing to the government support for the strategic plan on development of business undertakings and private sector intended by our national leader Heydar Aliyev, and his worthy successor, honourable President Ilham Aliyev.

The statement made by President Ilham Aliyev in his speech in the celebration of the 90thAnniversary of Baku State University - "transition period in the Azerbaijan economy has been completed" - represents that new opportunities are open for development of the private sector and business in Azerbaijan. As a sign of appreciation for government care to the public sector Azpetrol Company undertakes to work hard and closely participate in the development of economic welfare of the Republic.

Azpetrol Company started its activity with the opening of its first fuel station at Tbilisi Avenue, Baku city, on July 15, 1997. By the end of that year the number of fuel stations was 8 and in succeeding years increased to 70. At present 66 of which are petrol stations, the other 4 - gas stations.

In order to increase the quality of the fuel, ensure the continuous work of the stations and improve the client servicing quality Azpetrol put into operation its modern Oil Depot with 7000 ton capacity and Fleet consisting of 110 specialized tanker trucks each with 17-42 ton capacity in 1999, which supply filling stations with fuel.

We may say with pride that the activity of Azpetrol Company is in line with international standards and market economy principles. As an example we may say that number of the fuel stations owned by Azpetrol makes approximate 15% of the general number of fuel stations throughout the country and it has more than 50% share in the appropriate market sector. 

 

CEI: What can you say about the current role and place of Azpetrol Company in the market sphere of Azerbaijan?

Huseinagha Rahimov: Azpetrol occupies a leading position among the companies engaged in the retail sale of the fuel in Azerbaijan.

                We have taken a great deal of effort to gain this position. For high quality client servicing Azpetrol established its infrastructure in line with international standards; it includes the abovementioned Oil Depot, Fleet, fuel stations network, as well as supplementary service structures like car wash, cafes, motels and shops and etc.

                Management of the Company always places high emphasis on the issues of expansion and improvement of the said services.

                One of the priority directions of the activity of the Company is to contribute to the successful implementation of the State Program on Social and Economic Development of the Regions approved President Ilham Aliyev. In this direction Azpetrol focused its attention upon the development of its regional structures. Last year 3 new fuel stations were put into operation in the regions of the Republic; this year 4 petrol stations and 1 gas station have been opened. This promotes the growth of the service structures in the regions and opening of new workplaces.

                Besides Baku and the other big cities of the Republic, Azpetrol has its service structures in 31 regions.

                As a priority direction, we are planning to increase the number of service structures and the development of existing structures in the future. At present the Company has more than 2500 employees with average monthly salary of 460 manats.

                Without the staff ensuring high labour discipline and rendering qualitative service, it would be very hard to achieve our goals. Therefore establishment and maintenance of the staff consisting of disciplined and qualified employees is an important issue. We can say with firm belief that the Company successfully manages this duty. This was achieved through strict interviewing process, trainings periodically required in all fields for raising the level of professional skills.

 

CEI: What service types are provided by the Company for its clients?

Huseinagha Rahimov: The trademark "Azpetrol" is one of the most famous brands of Azerbaijan and is known as a symbol of high quality product and service.

                The main service type rendered by the Company is the retail sale of the petrol marked as AI 95, AI 93, as well as diesel and liquid gas fuel.

                The Company is also engaged in the wholesale of the fuel. This service type is provided through direct delivery of the fuel to the consumers in the tanker trucks of the Company, as well as by the trucks of the clients. Azpetrol has entered into middle and long-term agreements with many local and foreign companies acting in the territory of Azerbaijan.

                 The quality of the product is examined according to the state technical standards and a quality certificate is obtained.

                The Company provides to its clients non-cash payment services beginning from 2001. Now more than 3000 companies are using this service. Since 2006 we have been providing services to our clients in the fuel stations through Master Card, Euro Card and Visa Card.

                Besides the abovementioned, we render high quality services to ensure comfort to our clients and for maintenance and washing of vehicles through subsidiary service points existing in our filling stations.

 

CEI: As we know, your Company was awarded various international prizes?

Huseinagha Rahimov: To say briefly, one of the principle goals of Azpetrol Company is to render services with qualified product providing the protection of environment and technical safety rules.

In 2002 the Company for the first time underwent the audit of its financial statements in accordance with the International Accounting Standards. At the XVI International Convention of Quality held in New York on the 14th of July, 2002, Azpetrol was awarded by International Quality Summit Award for Excellence and Business Prestige.

In August, 2003, Azpetrol was audited and awarded certification to ISO 9001-2000 requirements. Our Company awarded in the "High Quality Service of the Year" nomination in 2008 at the event held by Caspian Energy Integration Award. Azpetrol was awarded "Ugur" national prize in the nomination of "Holding Company of the Year" in 2001.

The abovementioned facts demonstrate the level of achievements gained by Azpetrol and its conformance with international standards.

As a high estimation these prizes make us bear great responsibility. We understand this responsibility; we must work hard to preserve our positions obtained in the economic market of Azerbaijan and for future achievements.

 

CEI: What can you say about the impact of global economic crisis upon Azpetrol Company?

Huseinagha Rahimov: The world faces global economic crisis now. There is a decline and demanning in the world economy. However, a negative impact of economic crisis almost has not been felt in the economy of Azerbaijan owing to successful economical policy held by President Ilham Aliyev. Notwithstanding that there is inflation throughout the world, GDP rate in Azerbaijan grows. Of course, if there was no economic crisis GDP growth rate would be higher. Azerbaijan being one of the countries which has undergone fewer losses during the crisis proves that growth of our economy is on the right way, development process is irreversible.

CEI: Azpetrol is known as a company which closely participates in the public life of Azerbaijan. What can you say about Company's contribution to the development of culture, education and sport, its sponsorship and charitable activities?

Huseinagha Rahimov: Azpetrol Company takes a close participation in the public life of Azerbaijan. It is accepted in the whole world that investments made for the development of education, sport and culture is the long-term investment made for the economic development. We also make our best for the development of the Azerbaijan economy.

                Azpetrol participated in realization of several projects contributing to the development of our national literature. The Company financially supported the first publication of "Khamsa", a rare pearl of Azerbaijan literature in Latin script, as well as the publication of other works of N. Ganjavi, selected works of M. Fuzuli, Khagani, Shah Ismail Khatai, "Azerbaijan Folk Music Anthology" of 10 volumes and other literary works.

                Over the years Azpetrol has established a close relationship with the Azerbaijan boxing, gymnastics, chess federations and actively sponsors them in sporting events. Since August, 2006, Azpetrol is one of the chief sponsors of Europe Field Hockey Federation.

                The Company also has an active participation in charity actions. Azpetrol pays specific attention to support poor families, orphan's homes, charitable organizations, invalid people and refugees, as well as martyrs' families. 

 

CEI: What can you say about the objectives, perspectives and future development plans of Azpetrol Company?

Huseinagha Rahimov: The principal goal of Azpetrol Company is to maintain its position in the private sector of the Azerbaijan economy, support and take part in the development of our economy. We aim to expand the Company's activities, completely involve our regions, open additional workplaces, study state-of-the-art practices related to our field of activity and apply them.

                It is definite that no company can develop if there is not any hard working and honest staff with high potential opportunities, intellectual level and professional skills. As we always mention the most important achievement that we gain is our staff. Therefore the most important issue is to improve material well-being of our personnel, create for them the working environment meeting to the highest requirements.
